respectable (poem)

“Well, what did you expect?”

you chastise, looking me up and down,

tugging on my hem.

“Uh huh… typical”

you suck your teeth as that

tatted-up thug is

stopped and frisked

into accessorizing  with silver bracelets

behind his back.

You raise your eyebrows in

I told you so

as another black hearse

rounds the corner.

But ain’t nobody wearing no hoochie dress to they wake,

and ain’t nobody beltless, saggin at they wake,

and ain’t nobody got them designs etched into they fade at they wake.

Nigga, YOU casket fresh.
